Managing Expectations Regarding Industrial Equipment

Why Are UV-Based OCTG Coatings Better Than Water-Based Coatings?

If you use oil country tubular goods, then you need to ensure that the products you buy have protective coatings. These pipes and systems need protection against corrosion to last long enough to provide a good return on investment.

Many companies have moved on from using traditional solvent-based coatings because they aren't good for the environment. Water-based coatings have become more popular because they are more environmentally friendly.

However, water-based coatings aren't your only option. You can also use UV coatings on OCTG products. These coatings have similar environmental benefits, and they have some advantages you won't get with water-based options.

What are the benefits of UV-based OCTG coatings?

Get Better Corrosion Protection

While water-based OCTG coatings protect their products, they can deteriorate under time and heavy working conditions. Coatings can flake off pipes or develop blisters, at which point they lose corrosion protection. They can also allow surface red-rust growth.

UV coatings are more robust. They are baked onto their products and are less likely to flake or blister. They are also better at deterring red-rust growth. Their anti-corrosion properties are more effective.

Avoid Flammability Problems

Some water-based OCTG coatings are flammable. If they catch fire, they might burn. You might need to add temporary protection to your products while they are in storage or when they are being shipped to your location.

UV-based coatings aren't flammable. They don't need extra treatments to keep them safe from fire.

Get Easier Storage and Transport

OCTG products with water-based coatings are harder to store and transport. You might have increased storage and shipping costs if you use these coatings.

For example, you will need climate-controlled storage during cold weather. Water-based coatings don't do well in very cold conditions; they can freeze. When this happens, coatings might deteriorate, break, or lose some of their protective properties.

You might also need to use heated transport if you are shipping in products during winter months. Again, you need to find ways to keep coatings from freezing.

UV-based coatings aren't affected by cold weather. They won't freeze.

So, you won't have to pay to heat storage units. You can ship your OCTG pipes, products, and parts at any time of the year in regular trucks without climate controls. Your storage and transport costs will be lower.
